Year 4

Welcome to the Year 4 class page. The class is taught by Miss Hewitt, Mrs Furlong and Mrs Scott is our fantastic TA.

Year 4

It’s been an action packed term in Year 4. We’ve embraced Talk for Writing and role play and used it to help with writing based on Flat Stanley and Jason and the Argonauts. We’ve even used it to help write letters of complaint about the overuse of packaging.

In maths, we’ve been looking at place value, calculations, fractions, shape and statistics! In particular, we have been learning instant recall of times tables. Year 4 love tables so much that one of their favourite activities is the times table test! We really enjoy using equipment and interactive programs to aid our maths development and we loved having a visitor in to help teach us maths using football.

In science, we’ve been studying electricity and using simple electrical circuits. We then used these skills to make a model that had a working part (e.g. light, spinner, switch). During science week, we investigated how to make a working circuit using salt dough models. We also had great fun making ice without a freezer! The best part was tasting – it was better than Ben and Jerry’s!

We’ve learnt about Families and Confirmation in RE, and are currently learning about Advent. We enjoyed finding about about the Torah when we were visited by Jeremy during Judaism week.

We’ve also been studying local geography. One of our favourite lessons was using Google Earth to find our houses, which we then located on a map of Leyland.

PE Kits

Please can children have indoor and outdoor PE kits in school at all times. PE days are Tursday and Wednesday, however they may be needed on other days. Details of items required can be found on the website. PE kit should be clearly labelled so mislaid items can be reunited with their owners.

Homework

Spelling homework is given out on Wednesdays, with Maths given out on Fridays. Both should be returned by the following Wednesday.

In addition, children should be learning times tables. Sumdog and Moon Maths Hit the Button are excellent websites that will assist in this (as well as helping to embed other key maths skills.)

Reading books

Reading books are changed on Mondays and Thursdays. Children are encouraged to read for a minimum of 4 times a week.

Water Bottles

We encourage children to bring in a water bottle every day (no juice please) from which they can drink during the day. Bottle's hould be clearly marked with your child's name.
