COMPUTING

Computing and Digital Learning at St Catherine’s Catholic Primary School
At St Catherine’s Catholic Primary School, we are committed to preparing our pupils for the rapidly evolving digital world. We follow the CUSP Unity iPad Curriculum, which provides a comprehensive and innovative approach to teaching computing and digital literacy. Through the effective use of iPads, our children develop key computing skills, creativity, and the ability to engage with technology confidently, safely, and responsibly.

Intent

Our computing curriculum aims to:

  • Equip children with the knowledge and skills to use technology creatively and effectively to support their learning and communication.
  • Develop computational thinking, problem-solving, and coding skills.
  • Foster digital literacy by ensuring children can use and evaluate technology for a range of purposes.
  • Teach children how to use technology safely, including understanding the risks and benefits of the digital world.
  • Prepare children for the future by developing their confidence and fluency with technology in real-world contexts.

Implementation

  • CUSP Unity iPad Curriculum: We follow a structured and progressive program designed to develop essential computing skills such as coding, digital design, multimedia, and online safety.
  • iPads in Teaching and Learning: The iPads allow children to access high-quality apps and tools that enhance their creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Sequenced Learning: Units are carefully planned to build on prior knowledge, enabling children to master key skills before moving on to more complex tasks.
  • Practical Application: Children engage in real-world projects, including creating multimedia content, programming simple games, and using technology for research and presentations.
  • Online Safety: E-safety is embedded in all areas of the curriculum, ensuring children understand how to stay safe online and use technology responsibly.
  • Cross-Curricular Links: Digital learning opportunities are integrated into other curriculum areas, enabling children to apply their skills in a range of contexts.

Supporting SEND Learners in Computing

At St Catherine’s, we ensure all children, including those with SEND, can access and enjoy the computing curriculum:

  • Adaptive tools and software are used to support learners' needs.
  • Tasks are scaffolded to ensure accessibility while encouraging independence.
  • Visual and step-by-step resources help children follow processes at their own pace.

Impact

  • Confident Users of Technology: Children leave St Catherine’s with the skills to use technology confidently and effectively.
  • Critical Thinkers: Pupils develop computational thinking, enabling them to analyze and solve problems creatively.
  • Digitally Responsible Citizens: Children understand how to stay safe online and contribute positively to the digital world.
  • Future-Ready Learners: Pupils are equipped with the essential digital skills to thrive in secondary school and beyond.
