PSHE at St Catherine’s Catholic Primary School
At St Catherine’s Catholic Primary School, we are committed to providing a high-quality PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic) education that equips children with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to lead safe, healthy, and fulfilling lives. Our PSHE curriculum follows the 1 Decision PSHE Curriculum, Journey in Love for RSHE, and KIDSAFE, a comprehensive approach to safeguarding and personal development.
Intent
Our PSHE curriculum aims to:
- Equip children with the knowledge and skills to make informed and positive decisions about their lives.
- Support children in developing resilience, confidence, and the ability to navigate social and emotional challenges.
- Foster a sense of responsibility towards others and the wider community.
- Provide a safe space for children to explore sensitive issues such as relationships, health, and safety in an age-appropriate way.
- Ensure pupils are well-prepared for life in modern Britain, understanding concepts such as democracy, diversity, and rights and responsibilities.
Through the Journey in Love RSHE program, we support children in understanding relationships, the dignity of the human person, and the gift of life. KIDSAFE enhances our safeguarding approach, empowering children to recognize and manage risks while seeking trusted support.
Implementation
- Comprehensive Curriculum: The PSHE curriculum integrates 1 Decision, Journey in Love, and KIDSAFE resources to ensure a broad and inclusive approach.
- Progressive Learning: Each year group builds on prior knowledge, introducing new and more complex concepts as children mature.
- Interactive and Engaging Resources: Lessons use scenarios, decision-making tasks, videos, role-play activities, and creative discussions to deepen understanding and engagement.
- Safeguarding Integration: Topics such as online safety, consent, and mental health are covered in detail, supported by KIDSAFE modules.
- Whole-School Approach: PSHE themes are reinforced through assemblies, workshops, and enrichment activities.
- RSHE through Journey in Love: A Catholic RSHE program promoting respect, empathy, and self-awareness in the context of our faith.
- Assessment and Reflection: Children are encouraged to reflect on their learning through self-assessment, discussion, and feedback.
