At our school, online safety is taught through the 1decision PSHE curriculum, ensuring children develop the knowledge and confidence to stay safe in an increasingly digital world. Learning is carefully sequenced from Year 1 to Year 6 so that children build their understanding as they grow. In Key Stage 1, pupils learn simple rules for using technology safely, recognise the importance of keeping personal information private, and understand that their actions online can affect others. As they move into Lower Key Stage 2, children explore the risks of talking to strangers online, sharing images, and using games or chat platforms, learning how to make safe and respectful choices. By Upper Key Stage 2, pupils deepen their awareness of issues such as cyberbullying, peer pressure, image sharing, fake profiles, and online spending, preparing them to manage online relationships responsibly and safely as they transition to secondary school.
Our approach reflects the new CO:RE 4Cs classification of online risk, which helps children understand that harm can occur when they engage with or are exposed to potentially harmful Content, experience or are targeted by harmful Contact, witness or take part in harmful Conduct, or are exploited through harmful Contract agreements such as in-app purchases or online scams.
Through regular lessons, assemblies, and discussions, pupils learn not only how to protect themselves online but also how to be kind, respectful, and responsible digital citizens. Online safety is revisited each year, forming a core part of our safeguarding and PSHE education.
